The 2009 season has had a wonderful start with late spring rains. The vines have fired up well and growth is abundent. The warmth is now getting into the soil and fruitset is not far away. The Tempranillo, a very prolific grower, is more advanced than the rest of the vineyard.
The Nebbiolo is the best looking crop we have seen yet. It is the first time we have seen even spacings, good fruit set and the vines finally look like thay are starting to mature. We are looking forward see how the rest of the season pans out.
The Sangiovese looks strong. Always a good producer, the younger vines have thrived over the last 2 years and a very nice crop of fruit is expected this season, low in yield (pruned that way) to give us some powerful fruit this season. We will keep you posted.
THE 2009 HARVEST IS OVER
We must say the fruit this year is definitely the best yet. The Tempranillo was cropped at 2.5t per acre and is sensational quality. The Sangiovese is Luscious and cropped at about 2.7t per acre. The Nebbiolo, which is historically a terrible yielder, cropped at just over 1.1t per acre and the fruit was unbelievable.
Looking forward to giving you further progress updates of the 2009 Vintage.
IN THE GROUND & ON THE WAY
We have some wonderful experiences coming up. There is nothing "standard" in our vineyards. Look out for these 'flavours" in the coming years.
It was dissappointing to recently discover that the new variety we are ready to produce wine with, in "Albarino" was in fact "Savignin", an extremely close relative from France.
It's different....so it still fit's the Geographe Wines mould. This variety will still be marketed next year as "Almost Albarino".....Look out for it.
